Sailing Yacht Zero sea trials #06: Rethinking power

As Sailing Yacht Zero reaches the final stages of commissioning, the mindset of the team behind the project is shifting towards the sea trials and testing the boat on the open water.
In particular, they’re focusing on how the vessel generates and manages its own energy under real sailing conditions.
While the clue is in the name, for SY Zero, sailing is more than a way to travel; it’s the main source of power. Unlike traditional yachts, when Zero sails it generates the electricity required for onboard operations. For instance, a four-hour sail can generate 1 MWh of power, which is enough to sustain guest hotel loads at anchor for two full days.
Managing this requires a new type of thinking and design. One such example on Zero is the Mission Room, a dedicated command hub where the crew monitors energy systems, evaluates the weather, and plans daily power generation strategies. Another is the custom sea-fastening system.
Because Zero has to sail frequently to keep its energy reserves topped up, getting underway quickly is vital. To avoid spending hours stowing the vessel before moving, the team designed the aforementioned sea-fastening system. This includes elements like hidden magnets and spring-loaded clips for glassware that keep the interior secure and enables the staff to set sail at a moment’s notice.
With the crew fully engaged in preparations, SY Zero is getting ever closer to enter the open sea and put its revolutionary energy concept to the test.
